This second-fourth grade Science Class meets Common Core expectations. It covers numerous concepts that your elementary school-aged child is expected to know for Science, such as about plants, animals, ecosystems, the diversity of life in different habitats, plate tectonics, the roles of water, using maps, etc. Besides being a Science Class, this class is also a Social Studies Class. Your child will learn not only about 9 unique animals, their habitats, and the climates they live in, but also glean understandings about countries, continents, and cultures around the world. Course Goals

Students will be able to:

  •           Name the 7 continents and locate them on a world map.
  •           Describe structures and behaviors unique to 9 different animals.
  •           Draw animals that come from 7 distinct countries, plus 2 from habitats in the USA.
  •           Choose from an assortment of performance tasks and demonstrate knowledge as an end of unit assessment.
  •           Take a multiple choice test on habitats and geography.
  •           Explain why certain, unique animals can live in certain environments.
  •           Explain why the world has 5 main climate regions and varying plant habitats.
  •           Rephrase questions to write a good answer to a science question that goes beyond a 1 or 2 word response.

 

Target Audience

This course is primarily intended for second through fourth graders. Younger students could listen in and learn, but the learning assessments are geared for second through fourth grades. Middle schoolers may also find the concepts descibed in the lessons interesting, as they learn exciting facts about countries around the world, and how and why the vegetation and climates differ.
