New to homeschooling. Can someone help?

  Raigan1992 » Thu, 19 Nov 2020 00:46:41 AM

Hi,homeschool-placer We have been tutoring our kid for the past two years. It's not working out and we want to try online lessons. What must I do if I want to homeschool in New Jersey?

Welcome!homeschool-placer Homeschooling is permitted by law in New Jersey, however, you are required to observe a few guidelines before you start to homeschool. Homeschooling in New Jersey is considered one of the most lenient and straightforward places to homeschool in the U.S. as it requires virtually no government oversight. Parents in New Jersey are at liberty to decide many of the elements they find appropriate for their students to study. A parent homeschooling their students at home is not forced by law to be accredited as a teacher in New Jersey. However, using curriculum developed by a state certified teacher is highly recommended even if the certified educator is not a New Jersey teacher. If a parent/guardian chooses to pull a public school student from his/her educational program, the parent/guardian will be required to fill out atransfer form which includes information related to the desire to provide instruction elsewhere than at a public school for the purposes of collecting accurate data on school enrollment. The letter of intent should be provided at the start of the school year to the school board where the student was previously attending.

Hello.homeschool-placer Families will have to comply with several rules before they start to homeschool in New Jersey. There is essentially only one guideline to homeschool your kids in New Jersey. If your child was previously registered and attending at school, you should only let the school know that you will be homeschooling. You should notify the school with a "letter of intent" to homeschool. A parent or guardian or person(s) teaching a child elsewhere than at school is not required by law to be certified as a teacher in New Jersey. However, using curriculum developed by certified or licensed teachers is highly recommended. Hope this home-schooling advice helps.

If you are contemplating homeschooling in New Jersey, make sure to follow certain prerequisites which New Jersey law requires. Parents have basically 1 rule to homeschool in New Jersey. The Education Act of New Jersey says the following under Section 21(2)(a): a person is excused from attendance at school if [...] the person is receiving satisfactory instruction at home or elsewhere. You can browse the following page for details on New Jersey homeschool laws:
