Picture of Course Description

Don’t be afraid!

This course is intense- there are 250 images from prehistory to contemporary, but it is extremely rewarding and engaging. I studied art history in college and have been teaching this course for 5 years, and my students always thank me at the end of the year for this unbelievable experience.

From now on, wherever you travel, even when flipping through Instagram, you will recognize works of art and architecture, and this knowledge will make you beam with pride.

Studying for this course is not about memorizing every detail of each image, it is about looking at them against each other. After you make your flash cards, pick any two from the pile and compare and contrast them, no matter how seemingly different they are. I always mention cross cultural comparisons in my lectures- take note of them! This is a gift!

When you are answering a question always use visual evidence to back up your claim. For example, if you say: “the Virgin Mary in the Röttgen Pieta is sad”, you have to tell me how you know; she has downcast eyes, her head it tilted, the expression on her face is one of anguish as she cradles her son. This gives evidence for your claim.

I hope you will love this course as much as I do. See you soon!

AP Art History Syllabus

Course Description and Topics

Welcome to Art History! This course will be demanding but also rewarding, and will certainly change the way you THINK.

Art History is a special subject because it is not just about learning content. In your studies you will actually learn a language to discuss and analyze any type of visual art.

Our curriculum follows the guidelines for the AP® Art History exam, written by The College Board. It includes three key areas:

  • Big Idea 1: Artists manipulate materials and ideas to create an aesthetic object, act, or event
  • Big Idea 2: Art making is shaped by tradition and change
  • Big Idea 3: Interpretations of art are variable

For the AP course, the our curriculum covers 10 content areas:

Global Prehistory, Ancient Mediterranean, Early Europe and Colonial Americas, Later Europe and Americas, Indigenous Americas, Africa, West and Central Asia, South, East, and Southeast Asia, The Pacific and Global Contemporary.

This course includes:

  • 43 video lessons
  • 44 Image Knowledge Checks with answer keys
  • 42 Activity Review Videos (I go over each activity question and answer one by one)
  • 250 images
  • 10 Exercise Review Videos
  • 29 Cumulative Chapter Handouts with answer key
  • 15 Supplementary Sample Questions with answer key
  • Over 300 Sample Questions
  • 2 Mock AP Exams with answer keys
  • Over 20 hours of video instruction!

For each chapter there is a document entitled Chapter Handout, which provides a cumulative review of the chapter’s vocabulary, big ideas, and sample questions. For chapters that are divided into multiple videos, there are additional sample questions added entitled Supplementary Sample Questions. For each section there is an Exercise Review Video which provides a summary of the big ideas covered in these chapters, and answers questions from the Chapter Handouts.

This course has no prerequisits.

This course is for anyone who wants to learn about art! You can take this course and benefit from new aesthetic understanding even if you are not planning on taking the AP exam.

The AP® Art History Exam:

The exam is separated into two sections:

Section 1: Multiple-Choice Questions

Section 2: Free-Response Questions (Long and Short)

As part of the exam there is a set of 250 images that correspond to these 10 content areas. You will be responsible for knowing the title or designation of a work of art, name of the artist and/or culture of origin, date of creation, and media, and how to complete and artistic analysis regarding these images.

Making the Best of Your Experience

As with all coursework, you get out what you put in! The more time you invest into this course the more you will learn and the better your chances of scoring well on the AP exam. I suggest:

  • Read! After each lesson read about the images covered. There are many free resources available online.
  • Take detailed notes during class lectures. Notebooks should be organized by geographic location and time period with a specific section for vocabulary and cross cultural connections. Be sure to highlight evidence of big ideas.
  • You should download the AP Curriculum Framework with your comprehensive image list before starting the course. I advise you make flashcards of the images discussed in each lesson.

Course Goals:

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify and analyze 250 global works of art
  • Understand what goes into making art
  • Consider how artists make creative decisions
  • Understand the impact of culture on art making
  • Analyze how art changes over time
