This is not a revisionist course.  The course will use primary-source documents to provide an accurate picture of what life was like for black Americans during the 19th Century.  There are 45 lessons that are broken into seven modules.  Though it may appear at first sight that this is a traditional history course, this is actually an ELA course that uses history as its primary content.  Each module covers an area of black life in America.  It starts with 15th Century Africa and ends in America during the 1950s:

  • Module # 2 — Traveling from Africa to the Caribbean Islands & 13 Colonies — 11 lessons

5 Lesson # 3 - Many Shades of Africa 12:37

Lesson # 1 sets the historical foundation of the experience of Africans in America.  The five W's and the H (who? what? when? where? why? and How?) of the Transatlantic Slave Trade is explored.  Students will also be introduced to three Latin words which provide them with more strategies and confidence when they are ready to take standardized tests. Students are presented with the material, but they have to think through the consequences of that event.

Using History to Understand Race in America I:

Course Overview

This Social Studies/History course covers all the content students will need to successfully engage in courageous conversations about race in America.  This course has an emphasis on history, reading comprehension and vocabulary building. It introduces Latin and Greek words.  It incorporates some Common Core standards, but it also goes beyond common core requirements.   This course prepares students to converse with their peers and others by exposing them to primary source documents from the nineteenth century.  This is a full year course that will help students on Standardized tests in the future! This course is intended for students in grades levels 8 - 10.
