Course Description

Taught by a 20+ year experienced college English instructor as well as homeschool leader, the College English Prep I video course covers all of the content students need to successfully complete 9th -10th grade language arts, an equivalent of 1 high school ELA transcript credit or 1 Carnegie Unit.  The course has an emphasis on continuing to develop critical thinking, reading, and analytical skills, and all stages of process writing, and stresses self-evaluation and reflection. It covers the requirements of Common Core and goes beyond Common Core by preparing students for reading, writing, and speaking skills that will be used in college-level English composition and literature courses. This is a full year’s 9th-10th  grade English Language Arts course. No other materials other than internet access and a word processing program are required.

Course Requirements

Students taking this course will need to have completed ELA coursework for reading, writing, and speaking middle-school skills. It is primarily meant for students planning to take a college-level English courses either during or after completing high school.

Course Format

The course schedule outlines how the lessons are divided within each unit (narrative, drama, poetry) to include analyzing classic readings and other texts alternating with the other composition focused topics, starting with words, then advancing to sentences, and then to paragraphs. Odd numbered lessons include texts, discussion questions, vocabulary, with additional resources for futher study. Even numbered lessons focus on grammar rules and writing activities. By focusing on these elements of composition and modeling writing samples, students will be able to adhere these skills to more advanced compositions and texts in College English Prep 2, standardized tests, and beyond. 

Objectives

  •   Increase Proficiency and Introduction of New Language Rules—the nuts & bolts of language: Grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, sentence structures. Increase confidence and self-reliance in writing basics.
  •   Increase Proficiency and Introduction of New Composition Skills –how to use language for effective communication: Putting thoughts together in cohesive units, honing and polishing writing with revision and editing, increasing complexity and variety in writing through analyzing, modeling, and creating original compositions. Increase confidence in all stages of the writing process.
  •   Increase Proficiency and Introduction of Methods for Reading Comprehension—how to be a critical reader: enjoying reading, recognizing literary elements, analyzing composition methods. Increase exposure to genres, styles, purposes of texts.

Course Expectations

  • Watch and take notes ("annotate") for all video lesson presentations
  • Complete all lesson activities, worksheets, and writing assignments, including revisions and modelling writing exercises.
  • Read each assigned text. Annotate the text and compile vocabulary list.
