Course Description

Students will begin with foundational skills as stepping stones towards fluent reading. Students will begin learning alphabet letter recognition and alphabet sound acquisition. Students begin learning sight words in the very first lesson! Sight words are the most frequently used words a child will read, write, and speak. The incorporation of movement and song help actively engage learners in the understanding of the content. After learning sight words in each lesson, you will find your child singing the sight word songs around the house.

Together, students will learn how to develop comprehension skills when reading. Comprehension topics taught consist of: identifying author, illustrator, setting, retelling (beginning, middle, and end), problem and solution, predicting, and inferring.  Comprehension skills taught in the first lessons will build foundational skills towards independent reading skills students will learn in later lessons. Independent reading skills topics taught consist of: using picture clues, identifying sight words, identifying the first letter sound in an unfamiliar word, skipping over a word in a sentence, and fluency.

Lessons begin to develop in rigor. Students will practice isolating sounds in three letter words (initial, medial, and ending sounds). Students will practice blending skills of three letter CVC words. Students will learn word families, diagraphs, rhyming words, vowel pairs, and much more. Students will use their knowledge of these practiced phonics skills to complete activities together and in attached lesson activities.

This course includes:

  •          A full year's worth of academic content contained in three comprehensive units
