MATERIALS: Watercolor paint, acrylic paint, paintbrushes, cardboard, cearal box, string, oil pastel (and or crayon), white paper, watecolor paper, colored paper, glue, scissors and pencil. 

 

INTRODUCTION- Many of the ideas and projects we will be working on in this course come from my experience in the classroom and creating with kids. This is a creative course for all artist levels generally grade 3rd to 5th. Any student who wants to improve their artist ability or those who are a beginner artist who wants to have fun creating can enjoy this course. This course will give students the beginning foundations of being an artist by exploring the elements of arts and hone their creativity and critical thinking. Famous artists will be introduced as well as step by step videos and guides on how to create drawings and paintings. I hope this course can foster lifelong creators which have been proven to help students regardless of going into the arts with critical thinking. Anyone can learn how to draw well. In this course, we will learn how to create realistic drawings as well as how to paint. We will explore the elements of art and create fun and creative multimedia projects.

1 Lesson 1, Create a sketchbook 09:24

Learn how to create a sketchbook from a cereal box in preparation for this art course. Use this sketchbook to practice observational drawing as well as to create practice sketches from class. Create a drawing on the cover of the box as well as learn how to cut the box in the shape of a book. Artists will need computer paper, a cereal box, string, scissors and glue for this lesson. 

2 Lesson 2, Element of Form 06:02

Learn the visual element of art, form and how artists use form to create realistic and 3D works of art. Students will complete an activity on the element of form and learn how to draw realisticly.

Students will improve their drawing skills by learning the element of value by learning and creating a value scale as well a learning how to draw a realistic sphere. 

4 Lesson 4, Element of Line 09:36

Learn the element of line in visual arts as well as practice drawing skills. Students will learn about the elemt of line as a visual art element as well how artists in history used the element of line. Students will review their knoewledge of line to grow a better understanding.

Learn how to create an observational drawing as well as improve drawing skills. Students will use the element of form and value to create a realistic observational drawing of an apple. Artists will also learn how to shade to create a realistic drawing and learn how to make an image appear three dimensional as well as learn the importance of observational drawing. Artists will create an observational drawing of an apple for practice and preparation of a future still life drawing lesson.

Learn about the master Artist Cezanne in preperation of our still life drawing. Artists will learn about his work, life and artistic style.

Learn how to draw a realistic Still life Drawing with pencil and paper. Learn how to use observational drawing skills to create a realistic still life. Artists will improve their observational and drawing skills. Artists will use Cezanne as inspiration.

Learn about the Element of Space. Students will learn how the element of space is important in art as well as imiportant concents that will be used later in the course. Students will learn about negative and postive space, overlapping and other important conepts in the element of space in art.

Learn how to create a one-point perspective drawing. Students will create a landscape and understand how objects get smaller in the distance.

Learn how to mix colors in painting and use the element of color in art. Students will review color theory and complete a painting color mixing activity.

14 Lesson 14, Complementary Colors 14:25

Paint Sunflowers like Vincent Van Gogh and create a complementary painiting. Students will use paper, acrylic paint and a paintbrush. (Tempra paint can be used as a subsitute) Students will be inspired by Vincent Van Gogh as well as the element of color. Artists will learn step by step how to paint a still life as well as use color theory to create a vibrant painting.

Learn how to mix and paint tints and shades to create realistic paintings as well as use color theory in paintng. Students will complete a tint and shade worksheet.

Use tints and shades to paint like Emily Carr. Learn about the artist Emily Carr and care a landscape inspired by Emily with tints and shades. Artists will use pastel and paint for this painting lesson. Artists will also grow their painting skills and explore landscape and art of nature.

Learn different watercolor techniques. Students will paint on watercolor worksheet as well as use a paintbrush, crayon and watercolor. Students will learn different techniques that they can use when painting with watercolor paint.

Learn how to paint like Claude Monet. We will be using Monet as inspiration to create a Claude Monet, Lilly Pad painting. We will be using watercolor paint, watercolor paper and a brush. Acrylic paint may be used as a subsitute for watercolor.

Create a landscape and learn about atmospheric perspective by creating a collage. Students will create a monochromatic painting and watercolor background to create a multimedia collage. This lesson will require paint, brush and watercolor paper.

Learn about the artist Georges Seurat and create a Pointillism painting. Students will be an impressionist painter and create Pointillism painting. Students will use paint, paper and q-tips.

Learn about the Element of Texture and create a multi media collage inspired by Tracey English. Students will use paint, paper and paintbrushes to create textured paper to use in a collage. Artists will create a painted paper still life.

Learn the process of printmaking and create a Andy Warhol inspired print. Students will used recyled cardboard, a pepper, paint, paintbrush and different color paper. Students will learn about stamping in printmaking and create their own pop art colorful print.

Create cardboard birds with recycled cardboard, paint, glue and scissors. Artists will learn how to repurpse recylced materials and make a bird come to life. Students will create a form through sculpture.

How to draw a dog, step by step guide on how to do a drawing of a cartoon dog. Learn how to draw a dog as well as the art concept of symmetry. Symmetry is an important concept to learn in math and art. Students will draw a drawing step by step. 

Course Description

The Art course includes an exploration of the visual elements of art as well as learning and becoming inspired by the masters in art history. Topics include the elements of line, texture, value, form, color, and space. Topics also include artists such as Andy Warhol, Cezzane, Keith Haring, Monet, Surratt, Rousseau and Vincent Van Gogh. Topics include multi-media art, perspective, color mixing with tints and tones as well as the foundations of drawing and painting. Emphasis will be placed on developing creativity, as well as improving drawing and painting skills. There are no prior requirements for this course, any skill, and level welcome. Students will learn how to draw realistically, how to mix paint to create colors, tints, shades as well as how to use colors to create masterpieces. Students will create multimedia pieces of art such as collage and printmaking. Students will learn the elements of art such as value, color theory, texture, form, space, and line. We will also explore periods in art history such as Pop Art and Impressionism. Students will learn how to draw a realistic portrait by creating an animated self-portrait. We will be using acrylic paint, watercolor, oil pastel, pencil, and paper.

Target Audience

This course is for any young artist who wants to learn the elements of art and practice their skill but is recommended for grades 3-5 yet can still be appreciated for 6th graders who want to learn the foundations of art.

Watercolor, acrylic, paint brushes, cardboard, cereal box, string, oil pastel (and or crayon), paper, watercolor paper, colored paper, glue, scissors, and pencil. (Any paint, crayons, and color pencils may be used as a substitute to oil pastel and acrylic paint)
